Obituary

Sylvia Marianne (Harris) Cohen died Monday, October 22, 2018, in her home in suburban Lake Worth, Florida. She was 91. Her husband of 67 years, Samuel Louis Cohen, died in May, 2018.
Mrs. Cohen was born July 2, 1927, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Solomon Chanovitz and Ella (Jadlowker) Chanovitz (the family later changed the surname to Harris).
Fearing a Nazi invasion of Sweden, the family decided to emigrate to the United States, joining relatives in Utica, New York. Mr. Chanovitz and his oldest son, Leonard, left first, followed by Mrs. Chanovitz; another brother, David; and Sylvia, then 12 years old.
The second group took an easterly route, crossing northern Europe and Russia by train, then taking ships to Korea, Japan and the United States, arriving in Seattle. There they were briefly jailed for lacking proper papers before being bailed out by an associate of Mr. Chanovitz.
They continued by train to Utica, where Mrs. Cohen was graduated from the Utica Free Academy. She then went to Leslie College (now University) in Cambridge, Mass., where she earned a degree in elementary education. There she met Mr. Cohen, who was a student at Harvard Law School.
The couple moved to New Jersey, where Mrs. Cohen worked as a teacher in Kenilworth before having her first children, Stuart and Frederic, in 1953. The family settled in Westfield, where Mr. and Mrs. Cohen raised the twins, joined by Lawrence in 1959 and Joyce in 1961.
As the children got older, Mrs. Cohen embarked on a new career as a real estate agent, working for Weichert Realtors in Westfield. She and Mr. Cohen moved to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, before retiring to Florida and buying a house in Wycliffe Golf & Country Club in 1993.
Mrs. Cohen, who had been an avid tennis player, suffered a series of health setbacks, surviving breast cancer, being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease while in her late 50s and undergoing hip and knee replacements. Before she died, peacefully at home, she was under the constant care of home health aides and unable to walk, but until days before she died, she enjoyed playing bridge, gin and blackjack and taking walks in her wheelchair to view the beautiful Florida sunsets.
Mrs. Cohen is survived by her brother David Harris, of Ocean City, Md.; her children, Stuart, of Rensselaer, N.Y.; Frederic, of Henderson, Nev.; Lawrence, of Fanwood, N.J.; and Joyce, of Breckenridge, Colo.; grandchildren Laura Gallegly, Zachary Cohen and Emily Cohen; great-grandson Maddox Gallegly; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Sunday, October 28, at Palm Beach National Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at the Palm Beach National Cemetery.
