Obituary

On Saturday July 11th 2020, Robert (Bob) Weiss passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home in Boynton Beach, Florida. Born in Vienna Austria in 1923, Bob led a long and eventful life. Forced to leave his homeland, he fled through Europe to Israel and finally to New York in 1951. Bob lived in Queens, New York and then moved to Stamford, Connecticut before retiring in Florida more than 30 years ago.

He is survived by his Sons Richard G. Weiss (Pamela) of Branford, CT and Michael Weiss of Boynton Beach FL, his grandchildren Jenna (Anthony) Giordano and Richard T. Weiss and great grandson, Brody Giordano, all of Branford, CT. He was predeceased by his parents, his only brother Victor and his wife Margarete (Greta) who passed away just 6 weeks ago.

Bob always considered himself very lucky and his life was a testament to that. In 1939 Bob was fortunate to have been 1 of 2 people who avoided transportation to a Nazi death camp. Rather he was sent to a local work camp where he was allowed to go home each evening. Shortly thereafter he and his mother secretly escaped Austria and began an adventure that would take many years, through 4 countries (then) Yugoslavia, Italy, Switzerland, and Israel while seeking safety from the Nazi's.

Bob was proud to have been instrumental in helping to win Israel's War of Independence (1948-1951). In fact Robert was the last living survivor of that war living in the United States.

Soon after the war was won Bob immigrated to the United States where he met his wife Margarete. Together they lived in Queens, New York and then moved to Stamford, Connecticut where they raised their family. Bob had a strong work ethic and was an excellent provider. He retired from a 24 year career with American Airlines and at the same time, built his own locksmith and security business, before retiring to Florida over 30 years ago.

Upon retiring, Bob authored 2 memoir's drawing from his past. Joshko's Children was his recount of his escape from Austria and Unique Times 1948-1951 a detailed historical recount of Israel's War of Independence taken from his personal diaries during that time period. Bob shared his story through lectures with college students and various other groups. His testimony was recorded by the Shoah Foundation and he was the subject of 2 Austrian television documentaries.

In his spare time, Bob collected stamps and read many hundreds of books. He enjoyed the computer, connecting with people from all over the world over stamps and his life story. He dabbled in the stock market and always kept up with current events and politics.

Bob loved to travel. He and Margarate (Greta) visited many U.S. States and foreign countries. He loved to explore history, culture and museums in each new city. Above all, Bob was a kind man who loved to share stories and life lessons with others. He will be sorely missed.
