Obituary

Written by Craig Minervini, of Florida Sports Network.

The son of Italian immigrants, my father Richard Minervini of Pembroke Pines lived the life of what many have called the "Greatest Generation" to the fullest. Dad died on Monday, July 2 at the age of 91, succumbing to a courageous battle with heart disease. He overcame two hip surgeries in his final months that had nurses and doctors marveling at his strength and courage. "This guy," one doctor told me, "is not 91! He's amazing."

MY FATHER was a great sports fan, but his real mark was made in his service to his country. Graduating from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1939, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He was in the anti-aircraft division, participating in the defense of the Russell Islands and Eniwetok Island, and in 1944 the seizure, occupation and defense of Palau against Japanese forces. He earned a Purple Heart for his service. He often joked about his salary, "I made fifty-six dollars and 70 cents.. a MONTH!"

My Dad was the black and white, no-nonsense, no excuses type. He was a New York kind of guy, without the attitude. He lived life with gusto; loved to bargain for a good deal, loved to eat foods of all kind, especially Italian. In his later years, even some frozen foods! "Craig, you gotta try this Marie Callender Fettucini Alfredo. They could get $8-$10 a plate for this if they served it in a restaurant," he'd quip. And pity the car salesman who had Richard Minervini across the table from him. "Hit a home run off the next guy," he'd crackle, "Get a single off me!"

Dad spent 20 years with the NYPD, 10 as a narcotics detective, several as a mounted policeman. He used to be on his horse in the bullpen for NY Giants baseball and football games at the Polo Grounds. He also worked for the IRS, and here in South Florida as a U.S. Marshall. Said Judge Lenore Nesbitt in 1986 of Dad; "He is punctual, pleasant, efficient and professionaland it has been my pleasure to have Richard Minervini serve under me."

His first favorite team, was hockey's New York Americans in the 1920's. But he loved all sports to the detail of the detective he was. After games I worked, he would call me and pick out little plays that I often overlooked. I loved those calls. He made me think. He was Columbo watching a sporting event.
Often I would ask his questions to a player or coach the next day. Who knew?

Dad was married for 33 years and had six children, with my mother, Tina. In 1991, he married Estelle Caron, with whom he enjoyed traveling and visiting grandchildren across the country.

Yes, Richard Minervini lived a wonderful life. 91 years is amazing. And yet, the end is still jolting when you lose a parent. I'll miss you Dad. And all those post-game phone calls.

Richard is survived by his wife, Estelle Caron; his children Chuck, Ginna, Richie, Doug, Scott (Jeanne), Craig, and stepson Mike; our mother, Tina; his sisters Vivian Corbyons and Joan Creevay; 15 grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, family members and friends.
