IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rauni
Satama
February 5, 1935 – October 6, 2023
Born in Kannus, Finland to Anna and Fritjof Roikola in 1935. She was raised on a farm until immigrating with her cousin to the United States in 1956. They traveled by train from New York to Butte, Montana where her aunt and uncle were sponsoring her and got her a job in a hospital kitchen. She learned English while she was working there, and after 3 1/2 years she decided to move to Florida with a friend and they drove the very long hot drive to Lake Worth, Florida. Shortly after they arrived, a local Finnish radio program broadcast that a pair of new to Florida young Finnish women would be at the Finnish - American Club that weekend. A young carpenter named Paavo Satama and his friend hustled over and Paavo met Rauni. After a short courtship they married in 1960 and built a new home in Boynton Beach. She got work as a seamstress in Palm Beach and they raised two daughters, Renee and Johanna. Rauni was endlessly creative, an excellent cook and baker, loved entertaining, antiques and decorating. Rauni was predeceased by her husband Paavo, daughter Renee, sister Taina Peitso, brother Janne Roikola and is survived by daughter Johanna Satama, brother Leo Roikola, sisters Eeva Ollanketo and Katariina Kokko, many nieces and nephews and friends. She will be in our thoughts and greatly missed.
