IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Moses Jones,
Jr.
January 16, 1932 – September 6, 2024
Major (Ret.) Moses Jones Jr was born on January 16,1932 in Lake Wales, Florida. He was one of six children born to the late Moses Jones and Ora Mae (Shennette) Ford. He lived most of his young life in Miami, Florida.
Moses graduated valedictorian of the Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1949. Following graduation, he enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he completed a semester before enlisting in the United States Army. After serving heroically during the Korean Conflict, he returned with an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant in 1953.
Moses continued his education at Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1957. He then re-enlisted in the Army and attended Officer Candidate School. In 1958, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. During his military career, he studied Spanish at the Army Language School becoming fluent in the language. He was trained in Army Intelligence and Special Warfare. He retired from the Army as Major in 1974 after serving in the Vietnam War and completing other assignments in Panama and Massachusetts. He received the following honors during his career: Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
While in the Army, Moses married the late Mary Louise (Clarke) Jones, though they later divorced. He had two daughters: the late Michelle (Jones) Davis and Charlotte Jones. He also became a father to his late step-son Kenneth Jones. In his post retirement life, he enjoyed doing everything with his girls from serving as PTA Dad and school chaperone to fishing in the Florida Keys and traveling to attending operas and musicals. He supported them in their academic and extracurricular endeavors. He also took his daughters to sporting events: football, basketball, and baseball which he also enjoyed. When his grandson Torrin arrived, he became a proud grandfather.
Moses was a fountain of knowledge and was not afraid to share it with family, friends, and fellow church members at Christ the King Catholic Church. He mentored young men and women concerning careers in the military, attending college, and doing something positive in their lives. He also used his fluency in Spanish learned in the Army to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults at night school at a local high school for about eleven years. He retired from teaching as well.
Moses was a patron of the arts and proudly contributed to the Florida Grand Opera, which was one of his passions. He also contributed to charitable organizations. Due to his military service and good works he did in his community over his lifetime, he was recognized in 2016 by his Booker T Washington Alumni Association as a Living Legend.
On Friday, September 6, 2024, our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Hero, and Friend was called by God to his final resting place.
Moses is survived by his daughter Charlotte Jones, his grandson Torrin Davis, and his sisters Minnie Knowles, and Naomi Deliford. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
