Obituary

Mary Sentelik of Jupiter, Florida

August 10, 1929 - October 10, 2020

Mary Sentelik passed away on October 10, 2020 at the age of 91 from complications from COVID19. Proceeded in death by her husband George Sentelik of 57 years and 6 of her siblings (Amelia, Edio, Ida, Duilio, Loreta and Agostino). Left in life to carry her memory are her surviving siblings; Remo, Antonio, Robert, Sylvia and Carlo, her many nieces and nephews, her children; Gina, Michael (Laurie), Maria and Andrew (Donise) and 9 grandchildren; Lorena, (Jeffery), Kyle, Ciara (Ian), Brianna, Gabriella, Adian, Zane, Carissa (Patrick) and Cara. Her great grandchildren; Simon, Jax, Lily and Donavan Jorge.

Mary Sentelik (Maria A. Micozzi) was born August 10, 1929 in what is now known as Southwest, Pennsylvania to Erminia and Antonio Micozzi. Her parents immigrated from Italy and arrived in United States through Ellis Island in the mid 1920's.

Mom was born the first year of the depression and was one of 12 children. Her father worked for the Frick Coal Co., "The Coal Mine". Mom and her family lived in company housing (the Patches) and shopped at the company store during my mom's early life. Later, the family moved to Fairchance, Pa to a farm. We kids remember going "back home" to Fairchance, Pa. to help grandpa bale hay.

Mom was filled with proverbs and recited them frequently to her children and her grandchildren.  Some of her favorites were; actions speak louder than words,  a stitch in time saves nine, don't count your chickens before they're hatched, a penny saved is a penny earned, we fear what we don't understand. I could go on...

She left Fairchance, Pa. when she was 17 years old and got a job at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. She was a typist and eventually moved to a secretarial position which she was very proud.  Throughout our lives, mom would occasionally practice her shorthand using her index finger to write shorthand on her leg.

Mom met our dad at Goodyear. They married in 1957.  Mom had  4 children in 4 1/2  years. They moved to Stow, Ohio in 1960.

Mom was a great cook and everything she made had a little bit of Italian flair to it even it were chili. She made homemade bread and buns on Saturday mornings. The smell of bread permeated the house. Saturday night was pizza night with homemade dough from the bread she made early that day.  Her pies were to die for… Cherry pie was her favorite.  She made wine roast, mashed potatoes, broccoli with an Italian salad for Sunday dinner's, and one of our all-time favorites was her spaghetti and meatballs. Her hands often smelled of garlic and it wasn't uncommon to see her doing the two step or a waltz as she walked across a room. Or sing Que Sera, Sera in Italian or maybe a little ditty about a little cake of soap or the Chiquita banana jingle.

Mom had an even temperament.  There were only a few times in our lives that I remember mom really losing it. And they were well deserved times.  She was kind.

She was crafty… she made our Halloween costumes, drapes, barbie doll clothes and the occasional pinecone or thistle wreath would adorn our front door.

She laughed often and had a sense of humor.

Mom loved to travel and learn.  She traveled to her beloved Italy, Europe, Ecuador and throughout the United States.

Things mom was proud of; her cooking, a hard day's work, her honor roll status, her college courses, and for some unknown reason, her award for perfect attendance in grade school. Mostly, she was proud of her children and grandchildren.

Our mom and dad moved to Florida in 1994 after living in Stow, Ohio for 34 years. Andy, our youngest bother lived in Florida with his wife, Donise.  There, mom delighted in the role of Nana for Carissa and Cara.

She loved all her grandchildren and talked of them proudly. Mom had a special connection with Carissa.  It was, strong, gracious, supportive and born out of a similarity and familiarity with each other…it was lovely and wonderful to see.

Our mom wasn't perfect, she was perfectly human and most of all … She was perfectly loved by many. We  leave you with one of her favorite proverbs: Love many, trust few, learn to paddle your own canoe.

Thanks mom… we will miss you.
