Katie M. Smart's Obituary
Katie Merritt Smart, 76, died, Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 9:45am at the Palm Beach National Chapel, on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, with Reverend Wayne Padgett officiating. Internment will immediately follow of South Florida National Cemetery.
Katie was a native of Bladen County, North Carolina and was born to Katie Dent Merritt and Harmon E. Merritt on May 31, 1936. She graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1954. She moved to Siler City, North Carolina where she met and married her husband David Smart in 1958.
She worked for the telephone company in Siler City before settling in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she had 2 children , Elizabeth and David. She later became the Director of Human Resources for Koury Corporation where after 20 years she retired. She and David spent their later years in Palm Beach County where they were able to enjoy the warm beautiful weather with their children and grandchildren.
Her love and passion of reading fed her love for life. She was very active with her children's activities, including PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and encouraged them to explore all and anything that interested them, especially their education.
As a substitute teacher, she inspired through learning her true belief that anyone can attain their dreams and goals, whatever they may be.
Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, surf fishing, and enjoyed many outdoor activities.
She is survived by her husband, David Robertson Smart, Jr. of the home; daughter, Elizabeth Smart Kugler and husband, Dr. Jeffrey Kugler; son, David Robertson Smart, III, and wife Elizabeth Alicea Smart; sister, Evelyn Merritt Cain, brother, Adrian Merritt,
and her grandchildren , Preston, Isabella, Lauren, Peyton, David; nephew, Wayne C. Barr
and wife Carol, great niece, Keri Henley, great nephew, Christopher Barr, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends directly after in the Sun Room at Palm Beach National Chapel.
