Dr. Joel Smith, son of Dr. and Mrs. William Smith of Yonkers, New York, was born on May 29, 1937 and passed away on January 14, 2014 in Jupiter, Florida. he received his Medical Degree from New York Medical College and did his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1963 under Dr. Charles M. Harris, returning north for his residency and active service with the U.S.A.F. before returning to the area to join Dr. Francis Marais, and opened the first office in surgery in Jupiter, Florida. He is survived by daughter Chelsea Smith Reed and son-in-law Michael Reed, grandsons Taylor and Dylan, who reside locally, and son Benjamin who lives in New York and is actively engaged in politics. He was predeceased by his sister the late Elaine Leonard. Dr. Smith was on staff in Good Sam, St. Mary, Palm Beach Gardens, and has been chief of surgery for many years at Jupiter Hospital. Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 PM, with a funeral service at 5 PM, on Friday, January 17, at Aycock Funeral home; 1112 Military Trail, Jupiter, FL.
