George Gumas, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018 in Boynton Beach. Born in New Jersey to Peter and Bessie Gumas, George grew up in Brooklyn, New York where he attended Brooklyn Tech. In 1942 George enlisted in the Army and served in Europe during WWII in the 104th Infantry Division. He arrived in Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning to the United States he and his brother Nick ran a "spill the milk" game at Coney Island. In 1949 George graduated from The Cooper Union with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. While working at Compudyne in Hatboro, Pennsylvania he met the love of his life, Barbara Gumas. They were married in 1958.
George graduated in 1967 from The University of Pennsylvania with a PhD in Applied Mathematics. During his career George designed flow control systems for wind tunnels for NACA, the predecessor to NASA, as well as fish ladders for the Columbia River in Washington State. In 1968 the family moved to Hershey Pennsylvania where George became an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. After retirement, George and Barbara moved to Annapolis Maryland as well as to Ocean Ridge Florida where they enjoyed life near each of their two daughters, Diana Gumas (Lynn Bogovich) of Millersville Maryland and Chrisanthy Gumas Vargo of Lantana. George is fondly remembered by his friends and family for his quick wit that made people laugh and spread a special joy to all with whom he came in contact. We will miss seeing him on his walks to the ocean.
In addition to his daughters George is survived by his loving wife and "number one", Barbara Gumas; his sister Helen Dallas, of Petaluma California; his grandchildren Tyler Vargo (Kristi Weis), Virginia Vargo, and Christina Campbell Smith (Travis Smith); his great granddaughter Justyce Smith, as well as his nieces, nephews and friends.
