David was born in New Jersey to David Robertson Smart, Sr. and Elsie Gertrude Brown Smart on August 8,1934. His Family later relocated to Siler City, North Carolina where he graduated from Siler City High School. This is where he met and later married his wife Katie Merritt Smart in 1958. They later settled in Greensboro, North Carolina where he was a Scientific Glassblower Editor of Fusion Magazine, and an Officer for the Greensboro Police Department for 42 years.
Dave and Katie had two children David III and Elizabeth. David's strong work ethic pushed him in his daily and evening work duties. He always found time for family and very much enjoyed the outdoors, which was his true passion, whether it be with family fishing or with friends hunting. They would eventually move to the warm, beautiful weather of South Florida to retire. David and Katie spent their later years in the sunshine where they were able to enjoy their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Smart Kugler and husband Dr. Jeffrey Kugler; son, David Robertson Smart III and wife Elizabeth Alicea Smart; grandchildren, Preston, Isabella, Lauren, Peyton, and David IV; nephew, Wayne C. Barr and wife Carol; great-niece, Keri Henley and great-nephew Christopher Barr.
