Obituary

Captain Jeffrey James Tworzyanski, United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, 58 passed away at his home in Columbia Maryland unexpectedly on February 24, 2025. Jeff was born to Chester (deceased) and Gerda Tworzyanski at the US Naval Hospital in Newport Rhode Island, on May 3, 1966. His siblings included two sisters Cheryl (Joe Pyle) and Erika (John Zaruba) and two brothers Darrell (Janet) and Keith (Chriss). His father was a career Naval Officer in the Medical Service Corps and was transferred to the Philadelphia Naval Base a few months after he was born. Jeff grew up in Turnersville, NJ a small town in Gloucester County where he would spend his first 37 years. As a youngster, Jeff was very active in Boy Scouts, sports and the outdoors. He was a diehard Phillies and Eagles fan throughout his life. On September 21, 1981, Jeff was recognized for his achievement as Eagle Scout. Following graduation from Washington Township High School on June 20, 1984, Jeff decided to pursue a degree in Pharmacy as he enjoyed both biology and chemistry courses in High School. He graduated from The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science on January 12, 1990, with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. For the next 12 years, Jeff worked in the Pharmacy department of a couple of local hospitals in the South Jersey area. Wanting to be a licensed Pharmacist, Jeff pursued the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and was awarded the degree on May 15, 2000. Learning from a colleague of an opportunity to work for the Food and Drug administration, Jeff applied to the USPHS and was accepted into the program on February 22, 2004, at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Jeff would serve in the "Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)" department for his 21-year career and relocate his residence from Turnersville, NJ to Columbia, MD. The skills Jeff learned in the Boy Scouts would come into play as his unit was deployed in September 2005 as part of the Gulf Coast Hurricane Katrina Support mission, in which he spent the majority of the time outdoors in tents. On January 23, 2006, his unit received the "Crisis Response Service Award (CRSA)" for their work with the Katrina mission. Jeff's unit would be called on again in October 2012, this time for Hurricane Sandy Support Missions. On January 22, 2014, his unit received the "Crisis Response Service Award (CRSA)" for their work with the Sandy mission. While in the USPHS, Jeff also participated in the Ceremonial Unit of the Surgeon General's Honor Cadre (SGHG). This was a special assignment that Jeff was particularly proud to be a member of as they typically exemplify the highest of standards of dress, appearance, and military bearing. Jeff was promoted to the rank of Commander on July 17, 2009 and to the rank of Captain on September 29, 2016. Jeff's final assignment in the USPHS was that of "Program Coordinator". To this end, Jeff took up studies at George Washington University for an advanced degree in management and obtained his Master of Public Health on May 19, 2019. Jeff will always be remembered for being an avid reader and having a natural curiosity to learn about many different things. He was a devout Catholic and frequently visited the National Shrine of St. John Neumann in Philadelphia, PA. He will be truly missed by his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and, in particular, his mother, who was at his side during his passing.

A memorial service and interment are scheduled at the South Florida National Cemetery on December 4, 2025, with full military honors.
