With the heaviest of hearts, we mourn the passing of Anna Velez on January 7, 2023 at the age of 92.
Anna's life was well lived. She was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico and resided in both Puerto Rico and New York before moving to Florida in her retirement years. She was a modern woman, a working mother, ambitious, and forward thinking. She proudly obtained her Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in education from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, and was accepted to the doctoral program where she completed all of her courses with honors. Anna dedicated her career to teaching and mentored young students during her years working for the New York City Board of Education as a high school teacher. She later returned to the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, where she worked as a respected professor. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Anna's most meaningful life work was her dedication and love for her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. I'm sure we can all still hear her voice saying "sit up straight" and "wash your hands." In addition to those early lessons, she imparted loving guidance throughout our lives; always willing to listen, understand, offer assistance, and most importantly, cheer us on as we made our way in this world. She loved life and lived it with each one of us to the fullest. She truly enjoyed music and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. She loved to be surrounded by friends and family and embraced each day with laughter, grit, tenacity and, most of all, a little bit of humorous mischief.
Anna is predeceased by her husband, Jose Velez, her beloved daughter, Dianne Velez, her brother, Carlos Cruz, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Annette Levantino Velez. She is survived by her cherished children, Cynthia Flores, Anita Velez, Joey Velez, and Adriana Velez; as well as her adoring grandchildren, Vanessa Caballero, Christopher McGuinness, Danielle Silva, Dylan Silva; her precious great-granddaughter Mila Zigsa McGuinness; and her sister of the heart, Petra Cruz.
Anna will be greatly missed by her loving family and will always be remembered in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice in the name of Anna Velez.
