Obituary

Alice J. Horan passed away peacefully on July 29th, 2022,
in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Alice was born on November 10th, 1931, in Brooklyn,
New York to Gertrude Larsson and Olaf Fogelstrom.
Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Sweden to live and
returned to the States when Alice was about five years old.
She was later joined by her brothers Arnold and Alan.
There were stories on her father Olaf being part of the
work crew that painted the Statue of Liberty.

Alice attended Oyster Bay high school where she made
lifelong friends. She participated in the chorus and camera club. In her 1949 graduation yearbook Alice
was described as "cute." From her high school portrait, Alice was certainly cute. She was a pure beauty
with a heart-warming smile. That smile certainly caught the attention of Joe Horan who would become
her husband and soul mate for almost 70 years.

Alice and Joe Horan met one another while in high school and became sweethearts and soon were
married on February 9th, 1952, at St. Gertrude's Church in Bayville, New York. Alice and Joe would
raise a wonderful family of three boys: Kevin Joseph, Stephen Patrick and James William. All three boys
would turn out to be very active in sporting activities. Alice was always present at their sporting events
providing team support which was always recognized by all that were present. "Mrs. Horan is here!"
would be the usual refrain.

Her three boys also provided Alice with an assortment of the most popular rock 'n roll music at the time.
Usually, the music was played at volume "11" which would be a distraction to most people. Not Alice!
She never raised her voice to say turn that music down. Instead, she learned the rhythms of these songs
and became familiar with the musical work of the Rolling Stones, The Who, Grateful Dead and Blue
Oyster Cult. Alice was cool!

After raising her three boys with love and compassion, Alice became a licensed real estate agent and
worked alongside her husband Joe.
Throughout their life together, Alice and Joe made many close friends and enjoyed socializing. There
were always people coming together at their house in East Norwich, New York. They also accepted with
open arms all the friends of their sons. Their home was always a buzz of activity and a fun and safe place
to be.

Alice and Joe also took the time to enjoy themselves on multitudes of vacations, whether it be in the
United States or adventures abroad. Alice seemed to be agreeable to any kind of adventure that was
presented to her, whether it was a helicopter ride to an alpine glacier in Alaska or to the bottom recesses
of the Grand Canyon. Or an open-air jeep ride on perilous dirt roads in the San Juan Mountains of

Colorado or a snowmobile ride in minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures in Yellowstone National
Park. Alice was always up to new adventures and never said no. Her spirit of new discoveries and her ever
warm smile was infectious to everyone that knew her.

Alice and Joe retired to Jupiter, Florida in 2000 where they made a new set of friends. In Florida they
enjoyed the warm weather and many rounds of golf together. Alice became quite the skilled golfer.
Though she did not hit the ball very far, she kept it straight and down the middle. She had a formidable
putting stroke and enjoyed playing the game with Joe and her sons when they came to visit.
All through her life, Alice was connected to nature and animals. She lovingly tended to her flower
gardens and many indoor plants. She was always surrounded by pets throughout her life. Flowers and her
adored pets flourished around Alice because of her unrivaled kind spirit.

Later in life, Alice would be challenged with the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. This in combination
with her ailment of fibromyalgia, which she endured since the 1950's, would try to sour her spirit.
Alice battled on with courage trying her best not to convey to other people of the pain that she was in.
Parkinson's would slowly erode her ability to write and walk and also make her speech much lower in

volume. During these difficult times, Alice would never complain publicly as she held on to her life-
loving spirit along with the support of her husband, Joe.

The activity of golf was traded with for the fun of going to the arcade and casinos with Joe and friends.
Alice and Joe also continued to travel the world mostly on cruise ships where conveniently there were
casinos on board. Nothing was going to stop Alice!
Eventually the battle with Parkinson's was too much even for Alice. She courageously lived a full life to
the very end. Alice is now with her beloved Joe who passed two years previously as well as her oldest son
Kevin.

The best remembrance that can be made for Alice can be
done in many personal ways. Simple gestures as planting
and caring for flowers in your backyard. Adopt an animal
or make a donation to your local animal shelter. Raise a
glass of your favorite beverage and say "Skal" with your
friends or family. Alice loved having a cocktail whether it
was a scotch whiskey, pinot grigio or a craft beer. Finally,
never say no to any adventure that may come your way.
Alice would like that.
Alice's smile and spirit will be forever remembered
in this world and beyond.
Peace.
